Your best work will never be in your portfolio that is by design
Your best work will never be in your portfolio. That is by design.
The projects where I had the most impact are the ones I cannot show. NDA. Not shipped yet. Internal tools nobody outside the company will ever see.
This creates a weird incentive. Designers optimize their portfolios for visual impact instead of real impact. A flashy concept project gets more attention than a boring settings screen that reduced support tickets by 40%.
I stopped trying to show the work. I started describing the decisions. What was the constraint. What did I try. What did I learn. The best hiring conversations I have had started from a two-paragraph story, not a pixel-perfect mockup.
Write one paragraph about the hardest design decision you made this year. No screenshots. No mockups. Just the decision and what happened next. That is your strongest portfolio piece.
