AI did not break design it revealed which parts were already broken

AI did not break design. It revealed which parts were already broken.

The work AI is compressing right now, UI production, screen generation, handoff prep, was never really the point. We let it become the center of the job because it was measurable and billable. It looked like output.

What AI cannot compress is the part that requires real user understanding. The messy conversations. The moment you realize the brief is wrong. The judgment call about what to ship and what to kill. That work has always been the job. We just buried it under deliverables.

I have been watching this play out with clients across fintech and SaaS. The designers who are getting squeezed are the ones whose value lived in execution speed. The ones gaining ground are treating research, synthesis, and decision-making as their core output.

Open your next design brief. Highlight every assumption that was not validated with a real user. That list is where your actual work starts.
