Freelance design work shrank 17 percent in eight months after ChatGPT launched. Entry-level projects on Upwork dropped from 15 percent to under 9 percent.

The middle is collapsing fast. I work as a contractor in fintech and crypto, and the work I get now is the opposite of commodity. Strategic UX. Mobile flows nobody has shipped before. Design systems built around real constraints.

Canva and Midjourney did not steal the middle. They exposed that the middle was never differentiated to begin with. What survives is judgment.

In practice that means getting briefed on something the team has been stuck on for six weeks, not producing fifty variants of a screen.

If your work could be described as a deliverable, AI is coming for it. If your work is described as a decision, you are probably fine. So which one are you actually selling right now?
