Minimalism had a decade-long run and it just ended
Minimalism had a decade-long run and it just ended.
It started as discipline. Strip the interface down, force hierarchy, kill the decoration nobody needed. That was a real correction against cluttered 2000s design and it made things better for a while.
Then it curdled. Every fintech app got the same rounded card, the same friendly illustration, the same restrained palette that reads as safe rather than considered. Corporate Memphis became the industry's default shorthand for legitimacy and nothing else. Minimalism stopped being a discipline and became a costume everyone wore to look credible.
What comes next is not maximalism for its own sake. Neumorphism, skeuomorphic detail, brutalist type choices, all building texture and personality back on top of the structure minimalism actually taught us. The lesson survives, the sameness does not.
Look at the last three products you shipped. If you could swap the logo and nobody would notice, was that ever minimalism, or just the safest option available?
