368 neobanks, 127 actual banking licenses

LinkedIn

368 active neobanks. 1.46 billion users. Only 127 of them hold an actual banking license.

The rest run on sponsor banks and BaaS middlemen. Nice app, nice onboarding flow, nice card design. Underneath, someone else holds the ledger. And when that middleman fails, customers do not get deposit insurance. They get bankruptcy court, because the layer that tracked whose dollar was whose was never really theirs to begin with.

I have designed onboarding flows for fintech clients who obsessed over the sign up screen and never once asked who owned the ledger behind it. That is backwards. The prettiest card design in the world does not survive a sponsor bank collapse.

If you are designing or building a fintech product right now, ask this before you touch a single pixel: who actually holds our users' money, and what happens to them if that party disappears. If you cannot answer it in one sentence, that is the real risk in your product, not your onboarding conversion rate.
