Airbnb's CEO is building an AI lab that refuses to build a chatbot.
Brian Chesky is launching an independent AI lab focused on design and user experience, not on a generic conversational assistant. His bet is specific: multiple specialized tools tuned to one job each, like trip planning, will beat one universal chat interface trying to do everything.
That is the opposite of where most of the industry's attention has gone this year. Every company wants their own version of the one assistant that handles everything.
I think Chesky is right, and I think it is the same reason interfaces still matter more than most AI teams admit. A chatbot is what you get when nobody wants to do the design work of deciding what the product actually is. Specialized interfaces are what you get when someone did.
The teams still winning with AI right now are not the ones with the biggest model. They are the ones who decided exactly what one narrow thing it should be excellent at, and built an interface around only that.
What's the one narrow job you'd want an AI tool to be excellent at, if it didn't also have to be a chatbot?
