The compliance team killed my best design. Then I realized they made it better.

Working on a banking app in the UAE, I designed a beautiful onboarding flow. Three screens. Minimal input. Fast. The compliance review added seven mandatory fields and two disclosure pages.

My first reaction was frustration. My second was to redesign the flow so the required fields felt like a natural conversation instead of a government form. Progressive disclosure. Contextual help. Smart defaults based on the user's ID type.

The result was more compliant than what legal asked for and faster than my original "clean" version. Completion rate went up because users trusted the process more when it felt thorough instead of suspiciously simple.

If you design for fintech and treat compliance as the enemy of good UX, you are solving the wrong problem. The constraint is the brief.
